English Football League Championship (thường được gọi ngắn gọn là Championship hoặc Sky Bet Championship vì lý do tài trợ)[1] là hạng đấu cao nhất của English Football League (EFL) và là hạng đấu cao thứ nhì của hệ thống giải bóng đá tại Anh chỉ sau Premier League.

Mỗi mùa giải, hai đội kết thúc ở vị trí cao nhất sẽ được tự động thăng hạng lên Premier League. Các đội kết thúc mùa giải ở vị trí từ thứ 3 đến thứ 6 tham dự vòng playoff, với đội thắng cũng giành quyền thăng hạng lên Premier League. Ba đội kết thúc ở vị trí thấp nhất sẽ bị xuống hạng đến League One.

Sau khi giải bóng đá Hạng nhất Anh (Football League First Division) đổi tên thành Giải bóng đá Ngoại Hạng Anh (English Premier League) thì Hạng nhì Anh cũng đổi tên thành Giải Hạng nhất Anh (Football League First Division), nhưng chỉ sử dụng đến cuối mùa giải 2003-04. Kể từ đầu mùa giải 2004-05, tên chính thức của giải này là Football League Championship nhưng cái tên Giải hạng nhất Anh vẫn thường xuyên được nhiều người Việt Nam nhắc đến khi đề cập tới giải đấu này. Giống như các hạng đấu khác của hệ thống bóng đá chuyên nghiệp nước Anh, các câu lạc bộ từ xứ Wales có thể tham gia giải đấu. Điều này khiến cho EFL Championship trở thành một giải đấu xuyên biên giới.

Lịch sử[sửa | sửa mã nguồn]

Giải đấu này được thành lập năm 1892 với tên gọi Football League Second Division (Giải hạng hai). Đến năm 1993, Giải đấu được đổi tên thành Football League First Division. Đến mùa giải 2004-2005, thì đổi tên thành Football League Championship.[2][3]

Ngày 30 tháng 9 năm 2009, Nhà tài trợ Coca-Cola đã công bố họ sẽ kết thúc hợp đồng tài trợ với Football League vào cuối mùa giải 2009-10.[4] Vào ngày 16 tháng 3 năm 2010, RWE Npower đã được công bố là nhà tài trợ mới của Football League. Đầu mùa giải 2010-11 đến mùa giải 2012-13 thì Football League Championship được đổi tên thành Championship Npower.[5]

Ngày 18 tháng 7 năm 2013, Nhà tài trợ giải đấu mới đó là hãng cá cược Sky Bet công bố một thỏa thuận tài trợ 5 năm cho giải đấu này.[1]

Thể lệ giải đấu[sửa | sửa mã nguồn]

Có 24 câu lạc bộ tại giải đấu. Trong một mùa giải (thường là từ tháng 8 tới tháng 5 năm sau) mỗi câu lạc bộ sẽ thi đấu với các đối thủ khác 2 lần (vòng tròn 2 lượt), 1 trận sân nhà và 1 trận sân khách, tổng cộng có 46 vòng đấu, 552 trận đấu. Các đội sẽ giành được 3 điểm/trận thắng và 1 điểm/trận hòa. Không có điểm khi thua trận. Các đội sẽ được xếp hạng theo tổng số điểm giành được, rồi sau đó mới xét tới hiệu số bàn thắng, và số bàn ghi được. Nếu vẫn bằng điểm nhau, các đội sẽ được tính là xếp cùng vị trí. Nếu việc bằng nhau đó quyết định tới chức vô địch, xuống hạng hay giành quyền tham dự 1 giải đấu khác, 1 trận play-off sẽ được diễn ra trên sân trung lập để xác định thứ hạng.[6]

Khi giải đấu kết thúc vào cuối mùa giải, đội vô địch, đội á quân và đội vô địch play-offs Championship sẽ thăng hạng lên Ngoại hạng Anh và ba đội đứng cuối bảng sẽ xuống chơi tại League One. Play-offs Championship là vòng đấu loại trực tiếp dành cho các đội kết thúc mùa giải từ vị trí thứ ba đến thứ sáu, đội chiến thắng được thăng hạng lên Premier League. Ở vòng loại trực tiếp, đội xếp thứ ba đấu với đội xếp thứ sáu và đội xếp thứ tư đấu với đội xếp thứ năm trong các trận bán kết hai lượt đi (sân nhà và sân khách). Đội chiến thắng trong mỗi trận bán kết sau đó sẽ thi đấu một trận duy nhất trên sân vận động Wembley với phần thưởng là suất thăng hạng Premier League và cúp vô địch play-off.
